Faster Cosmetic Procedures In Order To Return To Work
Patients are opting for less radical cosmetic treatments in order to reduce the time taken off work to recover due to fear of losing their jobs, according to the Medical Director of a leading cosmetic treatment clinic.
Dr Ravi Jain, Medical Director at Riverbanks Clinic in East Hyde, near Harpenden in Bedfordshire, claims that in current economic climate, people are concerned that taking extended time off work to recover from cosmetic surgery may affect their chances of keeping their job through a round of redundancies and are resorting to less invasive treatments which have a shorter recovery time.
“The average breast enhancement or facelift can see a person off work for a week or more, yet there are a host of other treatments available which can provide similar results with radically shorter recovery times. For example, Macrolane is an injectable breast implant which can boost a woman’s bust in just under an hour and she can return to work the next day. Accent RF can give instant lifts with absolutely no downtime and Dermal Fillers can be done in less than an hour and can take years off a patients face. Even liposuction for small pockets of fat can be achieved with Smartlipo, enabling patients to return to work in just two days”, explains Jain.
Dr Jain claims that the rise in ‘Lunchtime’ treatments (procedures that can be completed in less than a hour) is a direct result of employees wanting to keep up with their beauty treatments without having to take extra time off work.
Riverbanks Clinic has experienced a surge in demand for ‘quick’ Botox and dermal filler treatments in recent months with bookings up by 54% compared to 2007. Dr Jain reveals that over a third of the bookings at Riverbanks are now for Botox treatments, which start at just £200 and can be completed in as little as thirty minutes. In addition to Botox, Riverbanks, which has been shortlisted for ‘Best New Clinic’ and ‘Best Business Development’ at the forthcoming Aesthetic Medicine Awards, has experienced a steady rise across a range of treatments including Dermal Fillers, Smartlipo, Accent RF and SmartXide Dot (for fine lines and wrinkles).
“Patients are increasingly realising that there are alternative treatments out there which mean they don’t have to take extended time off work and jeopardize their job security in order to maintain their beauty regime, most of which cost considerably less than traditional cosmetic surgery too”, says Dr Jain.

Important Facts About Scar Removal Options
Author: Lisa Ortega
For more information about Scar Removals at Derma Health Institute, see:http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=170
To have the skin at its clearest and most radiant, many seek freedom from blemishes of all kinds, and in specific, scars. For those seeking new treatment options that involve the elimination of various types of scars there a number of different options to suit the type of scar and your skin type, as well as your desires.
To have scar revision performed namely involves removing the scar from the skin while the patient is under either a localized or general anesthesia. This can be performed in various ways and it is up to the patient and the performing plastic surgeon to discuss how and what will be performed. There are a number of different types of scarring which involve overgrowth of scar tissue around the initial area of trauma, either due to a wound, burn, or any other sort of trauma. Scars are obviously the body's natural response to wound that threatens the body and so collagen is grown in and around the initial wound over time. With this in mind, it is important to appreciate the body's natural healing process. Nevertheless, there may be remaining unsightly marks left after a trauma on the skin and certain scars are more difficult to remove than others.
In the surgical world, scar revision can be as simple as a minor scar which can be excised, stitches placed, and then the remaining scar from the stitches can be worked on with ipl fotofacial light or other forms of lightening. Scarred areas are generally given a minimum of a year to heal so that the area is given the ability to get as close to a completely healed and non-inflamed area as possible. By allowing this time to go by, the skin is given more time to heal and also may help to prevent scars from recurring after they are removed with surgical procedures. Additionally, some scars may be so minor that plastic surgeons will recommend trying non-surgical approaches to scar removal before surgery is considered. Generally, if just the skin is darkened and there is no raised skin over the area, it is easier to lighten the scar to non-existence by the use of laser therapies, light technology, or even dermabrasion or chemical peels. A dermatologist generally works in this field of scar removal. Scar revision however usually implies the use of a more surgical approach to eliminate a scar which is difficult to remove without actual excision of some kind.
Since scar revision can result in repeat scars which come back, it is important to know that certain scarring is the result of genetic predisposition and no matter what, may return. Plastic surgeons performing a treatment on an area such as a keloid scar will typically let patients know that surgery is not as successful on these types of scars, which are generally caused by the body's overcompensation of collagen when the skin is traumatized by a wound. Speaking to a plastic surgeon and a dermatologist is helpful and allows patients to get a good idea of what they can expect if treatment is sought out for these types of scars.

Medical Skin Care: Treating Melasma
Author: Lisa Ortega
For more information about Laser Skin Treatments at Derma Health Institute, see:http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com
Suffering from unwanted skin conditions can be quite challenging since the skin is the most visible organ on the body. There are a number of treatment options to help remove the problem, some of which are considered to be minimally invasive and others which are more invasive. It is always a good idea to explore what options are available prior to committing to one treatment.
For some women, suffering from melasma is a fact of life, especially during pregnancy. The skin disorder can be heredity and/or linked to the production of hormones, which are especially active during pregnancy. The skin condition can also affect women who are not pregnant however and men as well. There are a number of ways to seek out treatment, and finding a dermatologist who you trust is a great way to start that treatment. There are a number of different treatment options and those include removing the problem areas slowly with creams and gels, facial chemical peels, laser rejuvenation, and other more recent technologies. Some of the technology that is hitting the skin care scene is the ipl fotofacial treatment which involves the use of an intense pulsed light which is helps to lighten the skin. This leads to lightened skin gradually and usually involves more than one treatment.
Most treatments for melasma involve minimally invasive treatments which offer a more gradual result. Melasma is considered a harmless yet potentially unsightly side effect of hormonal changes. It can be exasperated by prolonged sun exposure and during certain hormonal shifts. It is by no means only a symptom of pregnant women. Men and non pregnant women can acquire the skin condition. It is most often hereditary so if a family member was diagnosed, it is possible that it will flare up for a relative. The condition is also spontaneous in its ability to flare up and disappear on its own accord. Treatments are not necessarily permanent and some patients will have to have repeat treatments if they wish to have it removed over time.
There are benefits and risks which are associated with the treatment of melasma and some may find that it is best to simply cover the marks up with effective cosmetics rather than seek treatment. Some of the over the counter creams with acids and skin lighteners such as hydroquinone are effective at removing the marks but may need to be used habitually and this sort of use can have an adverse effect on the skin. It is therefore always a great idea to seek out information regarding the treatment option in question. Since the marks of melasma usually affect the skin on the face, it is usually a cosmetic issue and many will seek out treatments which help to remove the problem. Yet it is important to note that the facial skin is even more noticeable and any potential treatment options run a greater risk of causing unsightly skin damage which is unwanted. For this reason, understanding the benefits and risks of all treatments is best.

Why is My Face Aging Faster Than the Rest of Me?
Author: Patricia Woloch
For more information about Laser Skin Treatments at Derma Health Institute, see:http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com
Our faces take a lot of abuse during our lifetime. While we wear long pants and sleeved shirts to work quite often, we rarely cover our faces. They take the brunt of everything we do every day. Of course they’re going to look older than they really are. Here are some specific reasons, however, for why our faces can look 50 when we’re really much younger.
External Factors
External factors – what happens in the world around you each day – contribute greatly to our facial aging. You wouldn’t necessarily think that how you sleep could be an issue, but it is. How you lay in bed when you are asleep can cause facial wrinkles over time.
The biggies, smoking and being in the sun without sunscreen, can age your skin really fast. Even good old gravity wears away at the elasticity in your skin and helps pull it in a less-than-flattering southerly direction. Blemishes, discoloration and those cute-when-you-were-three freckles are all visible signs of damage done from living your life each day.
Internal Factors
How quickly our faces age is also affected by what happens on the inside of our bodies. Just getting older is the main internal factor to looking older but genetics is a close second. Hereditary conditions can easily change normal bone density, cell structure and basic body functions. Naturally, serious health conditions can leave the skin depleted, too.
If you’re wondering about menopause and other hormonal changes, you are right. Hormonal changes are key contributors to facial aging. Of course, menopause only effects women, but men can also experience hormone changes that can, in turn, change the look, feel and health of their skin.
In general, our faces lose their plumpness and elasticity and the surface layer of skin gets thicker. We are left with jowls that droop like a hunting dog, dry skin, droopy eyelids and lots of wrinkles and fine lines.
There is, however, a happy side of all this droopy, saggy, dryness. There are lots of surgical and non-surgical alternatives that can help restore a natural, healthy appearance to your skin. When you find the right cosmetic surgeon, discuss options and determine what procedure will provide the results you want, you can rest easy knowing your 30-year-old face can look young again – and you can still look like you.
Aging isn’t really all that bad. But the key ingredient is taking care of yourself no matter how old you and your face are. Start now and use sunscreen when you go outside, drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and use the proper skin care products. Men and women alike can improve their skins overall health by using a good moisturizer. Check with your cosmetic surgeon and see what he or she recommends for your skin type. Your skin will thank you.

Microdermabrasion, an anti-aging skin treatment, is gaining popularity for its ease of operation and the benefits that it offers. There are many benefits of microdermabrasion. Its procedure has the potential to meet a variety of your cosmetic objectives like the improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, acne, scars and stretch marks.microdermabrasion information is important before going for this treatment. Microdermabrasion treatment can be used to treat a vast range of skin imperfections. It is especially effective for treating skin aging and photo damage. Microdermabrasion can be used on most skin types and most of the skin disorders like aging skin, wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores, rhytides, keratoses, blemished skin, thickened skin and brown spots and pigmentation.
The microdermabrasion procedure has shown a lot of promise for the treatment of acne scars. Most people have got good results for the microdermabrasion treatment of their acne scars. These positive results have immensely contributed towards the success of microdermabrasion as a skin resurfacing treatment for acne scars.
The best thing about microdermabrasion treatment is that it is a very mild procedure. It scores over both chemical peels and dermabrasion as ablative resurfacing technique by being less traumatic and less time consuming. With microdermabrasion treatment there is no downtime required for the recovery. There are other benefits of microdermabrasion as well. This treatment is a lunch time procedure which you can get done at any out patient’s clinic. The easy to operate procedure can easily be performed at an average skin-enhancement clinic. The procedure uses a closed-loop negative pressure microdermabrasion unit that passes aluminum oxide crystals for abrading the skin under the negative vacuum pressure.
Practical Microdermabrasion Information
For most skin disorders, a minimum of five treatments is recommended. On average, the frequency of microdermabrasion treatments can vary between 4 to 8 treatments performed with approximately 2 week intervals between each successive procedure. The time interval is necessary for recovering the skin barrier function that is damaged after an aluminum oxide crystal microdermabrasion procedure is performed. Generally, it takes a time period of 1 to 4 days to recover the function and bring about an improvement in the skin tone. Repeating the superficial peeling procedure at 2-week intervals will allow sufficient time for the damaged skin to recover its barrier function. Most patients actually feel and see a difference after just one or two treatments, but scheduling additional treatments helps to increase and maintain the improvement. The skin improvement after microdermabrasion treatment is brought about by stimulation of fibroblast proliferation and collagen production. The new collagen deposition makes the skin smoother and reduces the visibility of skin blemishes.
Microdermabrasion treatment of acne scars requires more intense and aggressive treatment with more passes and more rounds of microdermabrasion treatment to get the best results.
Similarly raised or deeply pitted skin areas (possibly from old severe acne scars) and darker pigmented areas require multiple treatments.
Limitations of Microdermabrasion Procedure
Microdermabrasion is a mild procedure and it cannot be advised for those who have heavily damaged skin for which a more aggressive approach like a laser or a deep chemical peel needs to be tried.
Microdermabrasion is not able to remove tattoos, neither it is able to remove acne scars which are very deep down the skin. Similarly undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, active, weeping acne (stages 3 to 4) and active rosacea are the skin disorders that cannot be treated with microdermabrasion.
Lastly microdermabrasion procedure is not suitable for patients who have had any type of facial rejuvenation procedure or treatment such as Botox injections, collagen implants, or chemical peels within the past 3-6 months.

Photofacial Non-Surgical Anti-aging Skin Care Treatment
Author: Dr Brooke R. Seckel
To get a PhotoFacial here in Arizona, check out http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=169
Photofacial skin care treatments, also called IPL, short for Intense Pulsed Light, are very effective, no down time, safe methods for removing pigment, or brown spots, and excess or broken blood vessels from the facial skin. Browns spots, broken blood vessels around the nose, chin and cheeks are classic signs of sun damage and aging of the facial skin. Brown spots, often called age spots are caused by pigment that is produced by the skin to protect the skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. New blood vessels grow into the skin in response to skin injury, first to wash out damaged skin debris and later to bring in healing factors. As our skin ages, the brown spots and broken blood vessels are left behind on the skin after the inflammation or skin injury has passed.
These pigmented and red vascular spots create an aged variegated appearance to the facial skin which is called dyschromia, and is a sign of facial aging. Photofacial skin care treatments are the treatment of choice for benign facial skin pigmentation, age spots, brown spots and broken blood vessels and small red spots called telangiectasia on the face. Photofacial treatments are now preferred over laser treatments for these specific pigment and vascular lesions.Browns spots and broken blood vessels around the nose, chin, cheeks, neck, hands and Décolletage are classic signs of sun damage and aging of the skin. Brown spots, often called age spots are caused by pigment that is produced by the skin to protect the skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. New blood vessels grow into the skin in response to skin injury by the sun. This process of new blood vessel growth is called inflammation.

Photofacial skin care treatments or IPL treatments are the non-surgical anti-aging skin care treatment of choice for benign facial skin pigmentation, age spots, brown spots and broken blood vessels, the small red spots called telangiectasia, on the face, hands, neck and Décolletage. Photofacial treatments are now preferred over laser treatments for these specific pigment and vascular lesions.
Results of photofacial non-surgical anti-aging skin care treatments can be excellent--see before and after pictures of photofacial treatments of neck and decolletage below at http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com/catalog/article_info.php?articles_id=80
Photofacial or IPL anti-aging skin care treatments use a bright flash of visible light, like the light of a camera flash to remove pigment and blood vessels non-surgically from the skin. This pulsed or flashed light is very different from a laser and in most instances, less powerful and less dangerous that laser light.
I use a Photofacial IPL machine called the LuxGreen IPL made by Palomar Medical Laser Company in Burlington, Massachusetts. Palomar Medical is the premier manufacturer of Aesthetic Laser and Light therapy machines in the world. The LuxGreen Photofacial is the best Photofacial technology I have ever used. The LuxGreen Photofacial IPL machine is very effective and is the most comfortable for you the patient of any IPL device available.
Photofacial skin rejuvenation works by passing a flash of bright light through a filter that only allows a specific color of light in the flash to pass through the filter and hit the skin. In the case of the LuxGreen Photofacial, only light with a wavelength of 550nm (nm=nanometers or one millionth of a meter and is the measure of the green light wavelength in the visible light spectrum) to pass through the IPL filter and hit the skin.
The LuxGreen IPL 550nm light is selectively absorbed or taken up by the brown pigment in an age spot or the dark reddish brown color of blood in a blood vessel. When the Photofacial light energy is absorbed by the pigment or blood vessel, the heat from the Photofacial or IPL light destroys the pigment or blood vessel by heating it. Results can be excellent--see before and after picture of photofacial anti-aging skin care treatment of face at http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com/catalog/article_info.php?articles_id=80
This process is called Target Specific Photothermolysis. A specific target, that is a color, is heated (thermo) with a light (photo) beam and dissolved or destroyed (lysis).
Using color filters placed in front of the Intense Pulsed Light beam, a wide variety of colors can be allowed through to treat many different skin conditions including hair removal (LuxRed), acne (LuxViolet), and others. What Will My Skin Look Like Immediately After a Photofacial Skin Care Treatment?
Unlike lasers, which can cause the skin to peel and possibly leave scars, the Lux Green IPL treatments are very gentle on the skin. The pigment in the brown spot or age spot will darken very slightly, and the treated blood vessel will also darken a bit. However the skin will be intact. The treated areas may also be slightly pink for a few hours.
We place ice or a cool pack on the treated area immediately and this also may make the skin pink. However, the pinkness may be covered with makeup immediately. You may return to work. And your skin will be nearly normal the next day.Does An Intense Pulsed Light Skin Care Treatment Hurt?
There is minimal discomfort during an IPL care treatment. Anesthesia or numbing medicine is not required. When the IPL flash hits the skin you will feel a small snap or sting, but this is easily tolerated by all of my patients.
How Many IPL Skin Care Treatments will I Need?
Usually 3 IPL skin care treatments are required spaced 4-5 weeks apart for the best results. Multiple treatments are the price for gentle treatments that are not painful and do not injure the skin.
Technically enough power can be used to remove the brown spot or blood vessel in one treatment, but this energy level would be painful, blister the skin and possibly leave a scar. This is what happened with old time laser treatments, and the new IPL is designed to remove pigment and blood vessels painlessly and with no trace or scar left behind. To accomplish this we need to stage the removal in 2-3 treatments 4-5 weeks apart. The results are well worth the wait.
How Soon after My Intense Pulsed Light Skin Care Treatment Will I See a Result?
Generally you will see the results of your IPL skin care treatment at 4-5 weeks. The brown spot will be lighter or gone and the red spot or blood vessel will be much smaller. Some patients with thin skin and very light pigment or small broken blood vessels will see complete removal after one treatment.
However most people see definite improvement 5 weeks after the IPL treatment and require 2 more treatments for complete removal.
Who Should I Consult For My Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Skin Care Treatment?
The best IPL machines are found in a physician’s office. Less powerful IPL machines are allowed to be used in Spas, but results are not as effective with these downgraded machines. In my experience patients do not get the results that they want in a spa, and often come to my practice for repeat treatments with the LuxGreen IPL after having already spent money for IPL in a spa.
The other benefit of having your IPL treatment in a physician’s office is that you will be examined by a doctor who can properly diagnose your skin condition. Some brown lesions are dangerous and require medical evaluation and should not be treated with Intense Pulsed Light. If you have Rosacea or larger blood vessels on your face, a different therapy is required. These are medical treatments and should be done in a doctor’s office. Your skin will be evaluated for more serious skin conditions, and you will receive more effective Intense Pulsed Light skin care treatments.
How Do I Find a Good Doctor to Do My Intense Pulsed Light Skin Care Treatment?
Light based and laser non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments are best done by a doctor who is well trained and specializes in anti-aging skin treatments. Your safest bet is to seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist who has experience in laser and light based therapies such as Intense Pulsed Light.
I am of course prejudiced because I am a board certified plastic surgeon. However, a plastic surgeon is trained and capable of providing the full range of non-surgical and surgical skin anti-aging procedures and can customize your skin treatments to your unique face. Doctors who cannot provide all treatments are tempted to “fit your unique face” into the particular skin treatment they offer, and that is not the best situation for you.

New blood vessels grow into the skin in response to skin injury by the sun. This process of new blood vessel growth is called inflammation.
The new blood vessels bring blood into the facial skin first to wash out damaged skin cell debris and later to bring in skin healing factors.
