Hormones Imbalances Can Come Earlier Than You Think

It’s a new year, and most people have made resolutions to make a change. Some are to lose weight, increase financial gains, taking a much needed vacation, and so forth. But how many people made the resolution this year to actually FEEL GREAT. Most people struggle through each day feeling fatigued and lethargic with headaches and tension in the shoulders due to heavy stress loads. Afterwards, they go home exhausted, but yet sometimes struggle with insomnia all night long. Then the alarm goes off in the morning, and they feel more tired than when they went to bed. Did you ever think that this problem is most likely due to hormones being out of balance?

When most people think of Bioidentical Hormone Therapy, the first image in their minds is a woman in her 50’s with hot flashes who is going through menopause. Now, this is a common trend I see in patients at Derma Health Institute, but there is so much more that hormones do in our bodies besides controlling our temperature. Hormones have a powerful influence over both our mental and physical health. They begin influencing our bodies at birth, and stimulated us to grow. Hormones play an essential part of helping our bodies maintain a healthy environment throughout our entire lives. They have a significant impact on our cardiovascular and mental health. Both men and women of all ages can have hormonal imbalances that sometimes can be so severe that it impacts not only their quality of life but also their ability to function normally. These imbalances can actually increase their risks of developing severe cardiovascular or mental illness, like strokes, heart attacks, and dementia. Many physicians believe that keeping our hormones balanced is the most important thing we can do to improve our health, second only to diet and exercise.

At Derma Health Institute, I commonly see patients for skin problems, but underneath it all most of my clients have issues that stem from their hormones changing. Women especially can begin to have severe hormonal imbalances as early as their late 20’s to early 30’s. One or more of the following symptoms is present in every one of my patients: fatigue, irritability, insomnia, anxiety, depression, difficult concentration, brain fog, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, acne, aging skin, frequent common colds, and a lack of excitement for life. I have a deep passion for hormone balancing and how it can impact your life, because I personally suffered for a long time feeling miserable, only to finally discover on my own that a few little hormones were imbalanced. It was so simple to fix that I wanted to kick myself for waiting so long to do something about it. Now it’s my goal to make sure everyone knows they do not have to go through each day feeling terrible. If you wake up every morning feeling exhausted already, it will set the tone for the rest of your day to be miserable. Stop dragging yourself through life, and make a change. No one should ever settle for less than feeling great. You need to test your hormones, find out what is out of balance, and begin on your journey to the best health of your life!

The End of the Bio-Identical Hormone Debate

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Life Extension(R), the company that long ago sounded the alarm on the dangers of synthetic hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, has published still more proof that bioidentical hormones offer a far safer treatment option.

A white paper entitled Bioidentical Hormones: Why Is There Still a Controversy, published in the October edition of Life Extension Magazine, provides compelling scientific evidence on the safety and effectiveness of bioidentical hormone therapy. This position paper strongly documents the advantages of topical bioidentical hormone creams in contrast to the known safety risks associated with orally-administered conjugated equine (horse-derived) estrogens and progestin.

Individualized topical bioidentical hormone creams are available only through select compounding pharmacies, as the FDA has caved into the powerful influence of the pharmaceutical lobby and limited the sale of estriol, which has grossly increased its price and decreased its availability.

The pharmaceutical industry has billions of dollars invested in pushing antiquated equine estrogens and non-bioidentical progestin formulations that have been repeatedly linked to toxic side effects. They have lobbied the FDA to restrict the sale of compounding estriol creams by labeling compounding pharmacies unsafe and unregulated.

The FDA approved the use of Premarin(R) (mare urine-derived estrogen) 67 years ago, but today the same drug is still being prescribed as the answer to estrogen depletion for a generation of women who are desperate for better alternatives. The science is in. The answers are clear. The time for this controversy is over.

Bio-Identical Hormones vs. Synthetic Hormones

“Bio-identical Hormones” is a term that is commonly used today by doctors, pharmacists, and patients alike. However, “Bio-identical” is not a proper term to describe the kind of hormones we are talking about. “Natural Hormones” and “Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy” are the correct terms. Natural Hormones are hormones that are biochemically identical to the hormones found in the human body, and they are derived from plants. Hormones, such as progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, and DHEA can be manufactured from plant-derived substances, such as soybeans and Mexican wild yams.

Examples of the hormones used in conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are conjugated equine estrogens (Premarin), which are from the urine of pregnant mares, and synthetic hormones such as progestins. HRT uses hormones that do not match human hormones and are not natural to what the human body is familiar with; where as Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy uses hormones that are biochemically identical to the hormones in the human body. The argument here is that this difference contributes to some of the side effects of HRT. Women may break down these foreign hormones differently, which can lead to the production of harmful bi-products that cause a variety of side effects within a woman’s body.

In clinical practice, women largely tolerate natural progesterone better than synthetic progestins, and those who commonly have trouble with a foreign estrogen do much better on a natural estrogen. Natural Hormones deserve attention, but also require research as well as scrutiny from the modern conventional medical world. They offer not only a potentially safer and more comfortable alternative, but also one with more individualized treatment options to meet the unique needs of each woman.

Why is My Face Aging Faster Than the Rest of Me?

Our faces take a lot of abuse during our lifetime. While we wear long pants and sleeved shirts to work quite often, we rarely cover our faces. They take the brunt of everything we do every day. Of course they’re going to look older than they really are. Here are some specific reasons, however, for why our faces can look 50 when we’re really much younger.

External Factors

External factors – what happens in the world around you each day – contribute greatly to our facial aging. You wouldn’t necessarily think that how you sleep could be an issue, but it is. How you lay in bed when you are asleep can cause facial wrinkles over time.

The biggies, smoking and being in the sun without sunscreen, can age your skin really fast. Even good old gravity wears away at the elasticity in your skin and helps pull it in a less-than-flattering southerly direction. Blemishes, discoloration and those cute-when-you-were-three freckles are all visible signs of damage done from living your life each day.

Internal Factors

How quickly our faces age is also affected by what happens on the inside of our bodies. Just getting older is the main internal factor to looking older but genetics is a close second. Hereditary conditions can easily change normal bone density, cell structure and basic body functions. Naturally, serious health conditions can leave the skin depleted, too.

If you’re wondering about menopause and other hormonal changes, you are right. Hormonal changes are key contributors to facial aging. Of course, menopause only effects women, but men can also experience hormone changes that can, in turn, change the look, feel and health of their skin.

In general, our faces lose their plumpness and elasticity and the surface layer of skin gets thicker. We are left with jowls that droop like a hunting dog, dry skin, droopy eyelids and lots of wrinkles and fine lines.

There is, however, a happy side of all this droopy, saggy, dryness. There are lots of surgical and non-surgical alternatives that can help restore a natural, healthy appearance to your skin. When you find the right cosmetic surgeon, discuss options and determine what procedure will provide the results you want, you can rest easy knowing your 30-year-old face can look young again – and you can still look like you.

Aging isn’t really all that bad. But the key ingredient is taking care of yourself no matter how old you and your face are. Start now and use sunscreen when you go outside, drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and use the proper skin care products. Men and women alike can improve their skins overall health by using a good moisturizer. Check with your cosmetic surgeon and see what he or she recommends for your skin type. Your skin will thank you.
