WASHINGTON, May 6 / -- Mother's Day, May 9, marks the start of National Women's Health Week, a weeklong observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health. With the theme "It's Your Time," the goal of National Women's Health Week is to empower women to make their own health a top priority and encourage them to take small, manageable steps to improve their health and reduce their risk for many diseases. On Mother's Day, women across the country will celebrate with family and friends. This year, I also encourage women to celebrate themselves by focusing on their own health and well-being.
The most important steps women can take to improve their health include eating a well balanced, nutritious diet; getting regular physical activity; avoiding unhealthy behaviors, like smoking; and paying attention to mental health. In addition, women should get regular checkups and preventive screenings. May 10 is National Women's Checkup Day, and I urge all women to make an appointment with their health care professional.
In honor of National Women's Health Week and National Women's Checkup Day, more than one thousand events will take place across the country. To find an event near you, visit http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw/events/.
During National Women's Health Week it is important to tell our wives, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and girlfriends to make the time to improve their health, prevent disease, and live longer, healthier, and happier lives. After all, when women take even simple steps to improve their health, the results can be significant and everyone benefits.

America’s Health Rankings™ Reveals Arizona Ranks 27th in Health
PHOENIX, AZ (Nov. 17, 2009) — United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention today released the 20th Anniversary Edition of America’s Health Rankings™ showing thatArizona ranks 27th when compared to the health of other states.
Tobacco consumption and obesity have emerged as the two priorities that threaten the health of the nation. While tobacco use dropped from 19.8 percent of the population last year to 18.3 percent this year, approximately 440,000 deaths annually are still attributable to this preventable behavior.
Obesity has increased nearly 130 percent since the first edition of America’s Health Rankings.™ was issued 20 years ago. Currently, 27 percent of the population is obese.
The United States currently spends more per capita than any other nation on health care, including $1.8 trillion in medical costs associated with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, which can be linked to these national risk factors.
Arizona’s Health Checkup
This year, the Rankings not only provided an annual list of the healthiest and least healthy states, but also determined how Arizona ranked when compared to other states against the nation’s biggest health challenges since 1990.
· 2009 State Ranking: 27
· 2009 Smoking and Obesity Rankings: (based on a comparison of the incidence rates among all 50 states)
o Prevalence of Smoking: 15.9%
o Prevalence of Obesity: 25.5%
Arizona’s 2009 health strengths include:
· Low prevalence of smoking
· Low rate of preventable hospitalizations
· Low rates of cancer deaths and cardiovascular deaths
Areas of improvement for Arizona include:
· High percentage of children in poverty
· High rate of uninsured population
· Limited availability of primary care physicians
Results From the Nation’s Only 20-Year Scorecard
As the health care reform debate continues, the 20th Anniversary Edition of America’s Health Rankings™ has identified trends that support the need to ensure prevention is part of the solution. The persistent use of tobacco and unprecedented rates of obesity are limiting improvements in national health outcomes.
· Smoking — Biggest Battle of Past 20 Years: Despite focused efforts, nearly one in five Americans still smoke. Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the country. Over the past year, however, more than 3 million people have quit smoking, suggesting that smoke-free laws, smoking bans, increased cigarette taxes, access to smoking cessation programs and other interventions can make an impact.
· Obesity: Next National Health Battle: Obesity is growing faster than any previous chronic health issue our nation has faced. Today, more than one in four Americans are considered obese. If current trends continue, 103 million American adults — or 43 percent of the population — will be considered obese in 2018, making obesity the nation’s next health battle.
· Other 20-Year Improvements and Challenges: Over the past 20 years, the nation has seen significant declines in crime rates, infectious disease, smoking and infant mortality rates. Challenges since 1990 include the rising uninsured rate, lack of progress in increasing high school graduation rates and the need to continue to improve access to adequate prenatal care for pregnant women.
Economic Impact of Obesity
United Health Foundation commissioned a unique supplemental report for this year’s Ranking to help understand the financial impact of obesity. This supplemental “Future Costs of Obesity” report was written by Kenneth E. Thorpe, Ph.D., Emory University professor and Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease executive director. The report is the first to provide projections around future health care costs directly attributable to obesity that have been individually calculated for each state, as well as the nation. Left unchecked, obesity will add nearly $344 billion to the nation’s annual health care costs by 2018 and account for more than 21 percent of health care spending. .

Varicose Veins Can Be a Health Risk
CHICAGO, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Many Latinas who suffer from varicose veins often dismiss the enlarged leg veins as a cosmetic issue without recognizing they can lead to pain and discomfort. As many women often postpone visiting their doctors for other health symptoms, Vein Clinics of America is encouraging women to listen to their legs to keep varicose veins from affecting their everyday routine.

"As a Latina, my family is my priority and I tend to leave my own needs for last. My work as a nurse has taught me to look for signs from my body, and in the bodies of patients, and to keep special track of the hereditary diseases such as varicose veins," said Iliana Portela, Registered Nurse with Vein Clinics of America. "To be the strong support our family needs, women need to pay special attention to their bodies and speak with a doctor if they experience any pain, swelling, and fatigue in the legs as these can be symptoms of varicose veins."
Varicose veins occur when blood vessels have trouble carrying blood from the legs back to the heart. This is the result of faulty valves and weakened vein walls and can lead to pain swelling and fatigue in the legs.
While surgical treatments have traditionally been used to treat varicose veins, newer non-invasive treatments are now available that have largely replaced surgery. New treatments include:
•Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy: An advanced form of sclerotherapy where a foam solution is injected directly into the varicose vein, causing it to close off. A physician visually monitors the vein and injection on an ultrasound screen, allowing considerable control over the vein area being treated.
•Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT): A minimally-invasive procedure that uses heat from a guided laser to close varicose veins. A small optic fiber is inserted through a needle into the varicose vein under ultrasound guidance. The laser is then activated and as the optic fiber is removed from the vein, it heats and closes the vein. This procedure does not require hospitalization or complicated surgery and typically takes less than an hour.
Most health-insurance policies cover varicose vein treatment. To learn more about varicose veins or available treatment options, please visit www.veinclinics.com or call 866-617-VEIN.

Skin Script Products Review From Cosmetic Connection
Reprinted from Cosmetic Connection. Click here to view the entire Skin Script line.
Many of you will know that I am always on the hunt for the latest and greatest in skin care products. It seems that my quest for the perfect skin care regimen is never ending. Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve discovered a new line of products that have left my skin happy, glowing and renewed.
Skin Script is a line of professional grade products. These products have been designed using cutting edge chemistry and skin care research. But rest assured, Skin Script products are NOT tested on animals – which is an absolute must in my world. They are an amazing blend of natural botanicals, antioxidants, and effective active ingredients. As such, they are extremely effective and definitely results-oriented.
The Skin Script line has been developed to be “chirally correct”, which is something that I knew nothing about before I came across this line. Chirally correct basically means that the molecules in the active ingredients have been formulated so that they work with the molecules in your skin, not against them. They are designed so that they can be used by and integrated into skin cells, so that you reap the maximum benefits. I’ve learned a lot about the chemistry of the dermis (skin) from researching the Skin Script line, and I’m happy to pass along my findings to you!
I went to a local med spa and asked an aesthetician to design a skin care regimen for my normal to combination skin. Skin Script has products specifically designed for every skin type. I came home with the following products, and I’ve been using them for about three months now.
Cranberry Antioxidant Cleansing Gel
This is a great gentle, foaming cleanser for both morning and evening use. It’s packed with cranberry and green tea antioxidants which leave my skin radiant and clean, but not over-stripped at all. I never experience any tightness or drying with this cleanser, which is rare when it comes to foaming-type cleansers. Check out the Skin Script website for descriptions of all of the active ingredients in these products, such as Yucca Schidigera Leaf/Root/Stem Extract (to improve cell growth) and Litchi Chinesis Pericarp (Litchee) Extract (to aid in cellular regeneration and protection). I don’t know what half of these things are, but I can tell you that they are very effective — in a gentle, non-chemical way. This cleanser also smells great and lasts forever, since a dime-sized dollop is all you need for a nice, foamy face wash.
Pomegranate Antioxidant Creamy Cleanser
When the weather is cooler, I prefer to use a creamy cleanser to keep my skin from becoming too dry and dehydrated. The Skin Script Pomegranate Cleanser is the perfect soothing and nourishing cleanser. It leaves my skin soft and smooth, and never feels like it leaves behind any residue, which I have found with other creamy cleansers. This product is also packed with effective ingredients, my favorites of which are the grape seed and pomegranate extracts. I feel like my skin just had a refreshing botanical bath every time.
Retinol 2% Exfoliating Scrub
In the mornings, I use the Retinol Exfoliating Scrub in the shower; just to make sure that all of the little jojoba beads (used for gentle scrubbing) get completely rinsed away afterwards. This is a powerful cellular turnover scrub containing retinol (vitamin A) and kojic, which is a gentle skin lightener to reduce the signs of sun damage or even reduce the appearance of scars. I have never experienced any irritation from this mild scrub, and I use it just about every day. My skin always feels soft and glowing afterwards.
Cranberry Antioxidant Toner
Anybody who has read my reviews in the past knows that I am a devoted fan of toners. I just love the idea of a “clean sweep” if you will, after cleansing and before applying moisturizers and sunscreen. The Skin Script Cranberry Antioxidant Toner is a gentle yet effective step in my skin care regimen. At first I was a little freaked out by the color, which has sort of a yellow-orangeish hue to it, but now I’m used to it, and I realize that the color comes from the recipe of botanical ingredients that make up this soothing concoction. The Cranberry Antioxidant Toner would be great for all skin types.
Vitamin C/Green Tea Serum
I was going to save this one for last, since it’s my favorite product in the line, but I just couldn’t wait. This serum is amazing, and I say that because of the way my skin feels “the morning after”. I apply the vitamin C/green tea serum at night, under the Skin Script night moisturizer, so that my skin can drink it in overnight. When I wake up, my skin is so soft and supple; sometimes I just can’t believe it. As with all of the Skin Script products, this serum is chock-full of powerful antioxidants and other natural ingredients to encourage skin cell regeneration and repair. It contains Acetyl Octapeptide-3 to smooth and reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the “expression zones” of the face. Talk about a great alternative to injection therapy! I’ve noticed a brighter, firmer, and clearer complexion for sure. This stuff is a lifesaver.
Peptide Eye Serum
I don’t use eye creams or serums regularly, although I probably should. Skin Script’s Peptide Eye Serum is designed to reduce the appearance of dark circles and under-eye puffiness with a mixture of peptides and green tea antioxidants. I have noticed that the skin under my eyes is firmer and less puffy. As for my dark circles, well – I think they’re a lost cause. That’s why I love my concealer!
Ageless Skin Moisturizer
This is an awesome light, non-greasy moisturizer for all skin types. It contains aloe and Co-Q10 to stimulate collagen growth and tighten the elastin in skin. I find that I use quite a big of this moisturizer, which is fine by me. It leaves my skin soft and soothed any time of the day.
Night Moisturizer
I have talked often in the past about the feeling of “feeding my skin”, and that is exactly how I feel about using Skin Script’s night moisturizer. I pretty much slather my face in this great smelling cream before I hit the hay, and wake up with soft, nourished skin every day. It has a shea butter base, which is well known to be a rich and yet non pore-clogging hydrator for skin, as well as other amazing botanicals such as honey extract for its antibacterial and healing properties, and rose hip fruit oil to strengthen capillaries. Skin Script recommends this moisturizer for dryer, non-oily skin types.
Sunscreen Day Moisturizer
Skin Script also developed a moisturizer with SPF 36, which is a must for daytime use. The Skin Script replenishing sunblock contains micronized zinc and botanicals, and is perfect for daily use – even around the eyes! I call it the “pink cream” because of its distinctive pink coloring and rich consistency. A little bit of this moisturizer goes a long way, so this jar will last me forever. It goes on smooth and absorbs quickly into my skin, so it wears fine under makeup. And I can rest assured that I’m protecting my skin from the sun’s dangerous rays.
