Allergan BOTOX Launches "My Expressions of Kindness" Charity

To celebrate acts of kindness around the country, Allergan, Inc. (NYSE: AGN), the maker of BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA), has announced the "BOTOX® Cosmetic My Expressions of Kindness" charitable campaign. Allergan is asking everyone who is treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic, or is considering talking to their physician about treatment, to post acts of kindness online to help raise up to a quarter of a million dollars for three deserving charities: Make It Right, Dress for Success and Children's Action Network. The online fundraising campaign is being spearheaded by television personality, long-time volunteer and BOTOX® Cosmetic advocate Didiayer Snyder, who is joined by fellow BOTOX® Cosmetic fans Emmy®-nominated actress and singer Vanessa Williams, best-selling author Vicki Iovine, Oscar®-nominated actress Virginia Madsen and five-time gold medalist Nadia Comaneci as campaign ambassadors.

People are asked to get involved and show their support by visiting the campaign Web site at ExpressKindnessCampaign.com to complete a "My Expressions of Kindness" profile. Upon completion, a $25 donation will be automatically generated and each person will have the opportunity to choose whether it will benefit Make It Right, Dress for Success or Children's Action Network. The "My Expressions of Kindness" profiles completed by each of the campaign ambassadors who have pledged their support to one of the charity partners is also posted on the Web site. Other social media fundraising activities include Facebook and Twitter.

Mrs. Snyder is supporting Make It Right, which builds safe, green and affordable homes for working families in New Orleans Lower 9th Ward who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. Ms. Williams, who spearheaded the 2009 "BOTOX® Cosmetic: Express Success" campaign with Dress for Success, returns this year and is joined by Ms. Iovine in support of Dress for Success, which helps disadvantaged women express success in the workforce by providing them with the tools they need to succeed in work and life. Ms. Madsen and Ms. Comaneci are supporting Children's Action Network, which finds homes for foster children who are waiting for an adoptive family and works to improve outcomes for children in foster care. The organizations were selected based on research that shows women are drawn to causes that support their core emotional values – underserved communities, family and health.

"I'm thrilled to be spearheading the 'BOTOX® Cosmetic My Expressions of Kindness' charitable campaign because it is a way to give back to the community by supporting causes that are important to many men and women," said Mrs. Snyder. "Allergan asked me to become involved because they knew I dedicated a significant amount of time to supporting those less fortunate and that I was a big fan of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Now people who are treated with or thinking about talking to their doctor about being treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic to temporarily reduce the appearance of the '11' – those moderate to severe vertical lines between the brows that can give your face a tired and stressed look – can spread kindness online to help raise much-needed funds for Make It Right, Dress for Success and the Children's Action Network. It's fun, easy and a great way to support those in need."

"With this campaign, we are delighted BOTOX® Cosmetic can serve as a champion for causes that consumers care about and can help raise awareness and support for organizations that serve those less fortunate," said Robert Grant, president of Allergan Medical, a division of Allergan, Inc. "Since the approval of BOTOX® Cosmetic eight years ago, we have spearheaded consumer education campaigns that provide education about the product. Now, we are combining these efforts with charitable support and are joining hands with long-time supporters including Virginia Madsen, Vanessa Williams, Vicki Iovine and Nadia Comaneci – plus work with Didiayer Snyder our new ambassador – to support causes important to both them and the people who choose to talk to their doctor about being treated with our products."

Increase in Botox Sales May be an Indication of Economic Faith

(Phoenix, AZ) – In fourth quarter 2009 Derma Health Institute saw a significant increase in injectables like Botox and Dysport as well as facial fillers like Juvederm and Perlane. A recent survey conducted by MEDACorp uncovered similar results, reporting these procedures had increased nationwide for the first time since the economic downturn began in 2007. Findings like this may indicate consumers are beginning to feel a sense of economic optimism.

“Last year our Botox and Dysport business increased by 115% and our Juvederm and Perlane business increased 89%,” said Trish Gulbranson, Derma Health Institute owner. “This is a positive sign that patients feel like the market is starting to turn around.”

In this economic climate companies like Allergan, the maker of Botox, have also increased their customer service programs. They recently started a promotion called Brilliant Distinctions, which encourages customers to sign up for an email list and get up to $50 in credit towards their first Botox visit at Derma Health Institute. Patients then receive emails every 4-6 months reminding them to make their next Botox appointment. According to Gulbranson customers absolutely love this VIP service.

“The nice thing about Botox and Juvederm is that they’re a quick fix, minimally invasive and provide instant results. We’ve seen a decrease in the cost of both these products in the last few years. An average woman can get Botox for about $250 and get rid of that ‘angry line’ between their eyes. Juvederm treatments have also decreased in cost to from $600 a syringe to $399. With these, patients come out looking years younger, rejuvenated and relaxed.”

Derma Health Institute has earned the highest certification level awarded by Allergan, Black Diamond. As one of the largest providers of Botox and Juvederm in the nation, they have an immense amount of experience and results with these procedures.

Ramp Up Your Looks With Botox Treatments

By Nick Messe

You may have just discovered that, to your horror, you have sprouted frown lines and wrinkles on your once youthful face, and crow's feet near your eyes. Now all you can think of is getting rid of those impertinent insults to your good looks.

For more information about Botox at Derma Health Institute, go to:
http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=175

There is something you can do to reduce signs of aging. It is called Botox, which may sound a little frightening at first. You may have heard that it is the cosmetic form of botulinum toxin. That word that reminds us of botulism, which certainly has unpleasant connotations.

Botox, however, is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and has steadily gained popularity as the most performed cosmetic procedure the world over. Indeed, this toxin has the ability to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles.

The medication is injected into a frown or wrinkle crease, blocking nerve impulses and smoothing out the skin. It used to be that the only way to minimize the wrinkles on aging, sagging skin, was to go under the knife.

This, of course, was a rather drastic procedure. It was one that involved a lot of healing while the patient hid behind closed doors and then big hats and sunglasses. To top it off, the surgery would need to be repeated in a few short years.

Botox, on the other hand, is administered in pleasantly appointed medical spas by the capable hands of board certified Nurse Practitioners. These facilities are safe and clean and devoted to a patient's complete physical and mental comfort.

Be sure to take your time and ask lots of questions at your initial evaluation consultation. The nurse will explain that while there is some discomfort, it will be brief and low on a scale of one to ten. If you are particularly sensitive, the practitioner can use a cold pack or anesthetic cream.

You will gradually see a plumping up of your creases in two to three days, culminating in about seven days. Plumping can remain for a period of four to six months. The beauty of this treatment is that it is gradual. Your friends will notice that you look rested and fresher, but they will not suspect that you had something done unless you tell them.

When you notice the wrinkles coming back, you can simply have another session, or let the frown lines and crow's feet return. We'll bet that you will opt for a tune-up because Botox is fast, safe, and subtle.

About BOTOX(R) Cosmetic

BOTOX(R) Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines (the vertical "frown lines" between the eyebrows) in adult women and men ages 18 to 65. The glabellar lines, which often look like the number "11," can have a negative effect on one's overall facial appearance by creating a sad, angry, or tired impression.

BOTOX(R) Cosmetic has been ranked as the number one physician-administered, aesthetic injectable treatment(2) and 11.8 million treatment sessions with BOTOX(R) Cosmetic have been recorded in the United States alone.(3) High patient satisfaction rates following treatment with BOTOX(R) Cosmetic have been well established with 97 percent of patients indicating satisfaction with the product, according to a survey of approximately 1,000 patients conducted by the research arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).(4)

Important BOTOX(R) Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A) Information

BOTOX(R) Cosmetic is approved for the temporary treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65.

BOTOX(R) Cosmetic injections should not be given to people who have an infection where the physician proposes to inject. They should not be given to people who are known to be sensitive to any ingredient in BOTOX(R) Cosmetic.

Serious heart problems and serious allergic reactions have been reported rarely. If you think you are having an allergic reaction or other reactions, such as difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing, call your doctor immediately. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.

DermaSkin Clinic Warns Against Rogue Botox Providers

Mar 23, 2009 – “We are trying to make Botox more accessible for people who had not considered trying the procedure before. Nowadays, Botox is not limited to just Hollywood stars, and since the nineties the number of clinics has mushroomed. Although Botox has been used for other conditions in the past such as muscle spasms, cranial nerve disorders and ophthalmic spasm, when the FDA finally approved Botox in the early 90s to be used to treat facial wrinkles, the popularity of the toxin rose tremendously.” Says Dr. Sid Gautam of DermaSkin.co.uk (http://www.DermaSkin.co.uk)

For more information about Botox treatments at Derma Health Institute, go to:
http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=175

He added that, “On any given day, thousands of Botox treatments are carried out in the UK and the US, but with the increase in the number of rogue traders, one must be sure of the credentials of the service provider. It is truly a wonder of science and technology. Botox has been found to be very effective at removing and reducing forehead wrinkle lines and other facial asymmetries. In fact, after a few Botox treatments clients see that their facial lines actually weaken and their skin takes on a more permanently smooth appearance."

Speaking on the move, Dr. Sid Gautam said, "Botulinum toxin is extremely potent, but Botox injections are diluted to the extent that they are very safe to use clinically and have been proven to be effective and safe in the right hands." (http://www.DermaSkin.co.uk)

Number of Women Over Sixty Using Botox is Increasing

MANCHESTER, England, April 25 /PRNewswire/ -A NEW trend in beauty has been seen by staff at Transform, the UK's leading plastic surgeons and non-surgical treatments: the rise of Botox Grannies.

More and more women over 60 are having non-surgical treatments including Botox, dermal fillers and skin peels and treatments, as well as plastic surgery such as breast implants and facelifts.

For more information about Botox at Derma Health Institute.com, go to:
http://www.dermahealthinstitute.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=175

Encouraged by their daughters and the increasing high profiles and media coverage of amazing looking celebrities who are in their 50s, 60s and 70s, such as Joan Collins, Jane Seymour and Lulu, UK's Botox Grannies are driving a new demand for non-surgical cosmetic treatments.

Plastic Surgery and Botox Grannies

Transform Plastic Surgery, the UK's leading cosmetic surgeons and non-surgical providers, has noticed the number of Botox Grannies double in the last two years and claims that the over 60s market now accounts for over a sixth of all Botox injections carried out across cosmetic treatment clinics nationwide.

Disposable Income & Lifestyle

This group of recently retired have more disposable income than ever before, and, coupled with the increasing profile and popularity of plastic surgery and non-surgical treatments, many women are wondering why they shouldn't treat themselves and ensure they look good in their twilight years.

Celebrity Influence

Recent celebrity photos of Helen Mirren looking amazing in her red bikini have also fuelled the demand for both non-surgical and surgical treatments. Other figures released by Transform Cosmetic Surgery show that the number of breast implants, breast augmentations and face lifts among this generation has increased by a third on the previous year.

Botox & Confidence

Gwen Davies, non-surgical manager at Transform Cosmetic Surgery, explains the benefits of Botox for the over 60s: "There are two types of older women who want to have Botox and dermal fillers: those who have been having treatments subtly for the past 15 years and just want to look fresh and age slowly, and those who are just discovering the benefits. Botox is not a magic cure for deep wrinkles but it can soften lines around the eyes and mouth which can have a fantastic freshening effect on the face.

"Women over 60 who are having treatments tend to be more discreet about what they have done in comparison to their younger counter parts. Women who have looked after themselves and already have good skin would benefit from Botox the most. A small amount of Botox can have a wonderful effect on their appearance and self-confidence."

Shami Thomas from Transform Cosmetic Surgery states: "The number of procedures carried out is continuously rising; even during the credit crunch people still want to look good and are sill happy to spend money on their appearance. People are now living longer than ever before and there are so many high profile older actresses that women want the same effects at home.

"Many older celebrities are also very open about their treatments that they have had done so it is only helping to increase the confidence of potential patients about becoming a British Botox Granny."

* Understand that dosage strength (potency) expressed in "Units" or "U" are different among the botulinum toxin products; clinical doses expressed in units are not interchangeable from one botulinum toxin product to another. * Be alert to and educate patients and caregivers about potential adverse events due to distant spread of botulinum toxin effects following local injections including: unexpected loss of strength or muscle weakness, hoarseness or trouble talking (dysphonia), trouble saying words clearly (dysarthria), loss of bladder control, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids. * Understand that these adverse events have been reported as early as several hours and as late as several weeks after treatment. * Advise patients to seek immediate medical attention if they develop any of these symptoms.

FDA On Wrinkle Relief: Injectable Cosmetic Fillers

In the quest for youth—or at least a more youthful appearance—women and men are seeking treatments to minimize laugh lines, crow's feet, and forehead furrows. A popular treatment involves injecting cosmetic wrinkle fillers into the face.

Injectable cosmetic wrinkle fillers are soft tissue fillers approved as medical devices by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These devices are injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. Most of these wrinkle fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body.

Some people may need more than one injection to achieve the wrinkle-smoothing effect. The effect lasts for about six months or longer.

Successful results depend on

health of the skin
skill of the doctor
type of filler used

Uses

FDA has approved absorbable injectable cosmetic wrinkle fillers for correcting soft tissue contour defects, such as moderate and severe wrinkles and folds. Some absorbable fillers are approved for restoring or correcting the signs of facial fat loss in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The only non-absorbable FDA-approved injectable cosmetic wrinkle filler is for correcting facial tissue around the mouth.

FDA-approved cosmetic wrinkle fillers should not be used for

plumping the lips (lip augmentation)
increasing breast size (breast augmentation)
implanting into bone, tendon, ligament, or muscle
implanting into blood vessels
Filler Materials
Wrinkle fillers are made of various types of materials, and some include a combination of products. Some products also contain lidocaine, which numbs the skin at the injection site.
The materials used in injectable cosmetic wrinkle fillers include

Temporary (absorbable) fillers

Collagen injections are made of highly purified cow or human collagen. Collagen is a natural protein that is a major component of skin and other tissues in the body.
Hyaluronic acid gel is a protective lubricating gel, produced naturally by the body, that binds with water to plump the skin.
Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral that is a major component of bone. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a well-matched (biocompatible) material that dissolves in the body (biodegradable) and is implanted in the form of a gel.
Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biodegradable, biocompatible, synthetic material from the alpha-hydroxy-acid family that has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches and bone screws.
Permanent (non-absorbable) filler
Polymethylmethacrylate beads (PMMA microspheres) are tiny round, smooth plastic particles that have been tested to be biocompatible. They are not absorbed by the body.

Risks

Getting injected with cosmetic wrinkle fillers is an elective procedure. As with any medical procedure, it poses risks.

Possible side effects include

infection
Bruising
redness
swelling
pain
tenderness
itching and rash
raised bumps of skin (nodules or granulomas) that may need to be surgically removed
death of skin, which may cause disfiguration, if the cosmetic wrinkle filler is injected and blocks a blood vessel
sore (abscess) at the injection site
wrinkle filler that breaks through the skin
open or draining wounds
blurred vision and flu-like symptoms
increased allergic reaction that may lead to a severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) that requires emergency medical help. (Your doctor may request a pre-treatment allergy test to determine if you are allergic to the filler.)
Most side effects occur shortly after injection and go away within seven days. In some cases, side effects may emerge weeks, months, or years later. A non-absorbable filler may cause long-term side effects.
You should not use cosmetic wrinkle fillers if any of the following applies to you:

severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylactic shock
allergy to cow collagen or eggs
allergy to lidocaine
inflamed or infected skin
prone to form excessive scarring (keloid) or thick scarring (hypertrophic scars)
bleeding disorder
active inflammatory condition (cysts, pimples, rashes or hives) or infection; you should postpone treatment until the condition is controlled.

What About Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is an injectable drug, but it is not a wrinkle filler. Instead of filling the wrinkle, it keeps muscles from tightening so the wrinkles don’t show as much. FDA has approved Botox Cosmetic only to treat wrinkles between the eyebrows.

Allergan, Inc. Marks 20 Years Since Botox First Approved By FDA

IRVINE, Calif., April 15, 2009 — It has been nearly 20 years since BOTOX® was first approved by the FDA to treat two specific eye muscle disorders. Since 1989, the FDA has approved two additional therapeutic indications for BOTOX® and one aesthetic indication, using the same formulation and under the name BOTOX® Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A), with dosing specific to temporarily treat moderate to severe glabellar lines in people ages 18 to 65. To date, BOTOX® is approved for 20 different therapeutic indications in approximately 80 countries worldwide. BOTOX® Cosmetic is authorized for aesthetic treatment in approximately 60 countries.

The Webinar also featured a new video demonstrating in detail how BOTOX® therapy works by blocking overactive nerve impulses that trigger excessive muscle contractions or glandular activity.

"One of the advantages of BOTOX® therapy is its highly selective mechanism of action and targeted mode of administration, via injection directly into the affected muscle or gland, which in large part explains the product's clinical performance and predictable patient outcomes," explained Mitchell F. Brin, M.D., Allergan's Senior Vice President of Global Development and Chief Scientific Officer for BOTOX®.

No Two Botulinum Toxins Are AlikeWith additional botulinum toxin products awaiting FDA approval, Dr. Brin reviewed the scientific differences among botulinum toxin therapies and the factors that physicians and patients should weigh when considering treatment options.
"The well-established risk/benefit profile of BOTOX® is unique to the product, because no two botulinum toxins are alike," said Dr. Brin. He pointed out that botulinum toxin products are biologics – i.e., derived from living substances, in this case, from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This bacteria produces seven different subtypes of botulinum toxin, with type A being the most potent. Differences among subtypes may influence therapeutic effects and how long they last, or the occurrence of adverse events following treatment. Even among botulinum toxin products of the same subtype, variations in manufacturing processes can result in differences in the product's characteristics, including formulation (e.g., molecular uniformity and weights of toxin complexes), pharmacokinetics, and clinical parameters such as efficacy, duration of effect, risk/benefit profile and immunogenicity.

"Because of these differences, each botulinum toxin also has distinct dosing requirements," said Dr. Brin. "Importantly for physicians and patients, this means that BOTOX® is not interchangeable with other botulinum toxins and a physician cannot simply use a fixed-dose ratio and expect the same precise and predictable results."

The Patient and Physician ExperienceWhile practicing in the 1980s at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, Dr. Brin, a neurologist, co-led one of the first clinical trials of BOTOX® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) as a treatment for cervical dystonia supported by the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Orphan Product Development, when a young man named Tom Stampe was referred to him.

"I was 23 years old, and I started getting this very bad neck pain," said Mr. Stampe. "One day the neck pain started making me go into a twitch and my head started pulling to one side to the point that it stayed stuck on my right shoulder. For three years I couldn't move it, couldn't turn it, couldn't do anything. After years of misdiagnosis and disability, I was finally referred to Dr. Brin who diagnosed my condition as cervical dystonia. At that time they were trying out a new investigational drug, and he thought I'd be a very good candidate for it. It was BOTOX®. Shortly after those first injections my head and neck began to move freely, and it's a feeling I'll never forget." Today, Mr. Stampe is an advocate for cervical dystonia patients and currently serves as President of the New York chapter of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation.

"The clinical development of BOTOX® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) has improved the management of a number of disabling conditions characterized by excessive muscle or glandular activity, and just as importantly for patients like Mr. Stampe, it has expanded interest in their diagnosis and treatment," said Joseph Jankovic, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Distinguished Chair in Movement Disorders, and Director of the Parkinson's Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinic, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Jankovic, a leader in the field of neurotoxin research, led the first studies of BOTOX® for the treatment of cervical dystonia and blepharospasm in the 1980s.

"Now it is decades later, and we have a wealth of clinical data on BOTOX®, as well as expertise in its administration and a thorough scientific understanding of the product, and we know that optimal results with BOTOX® depend on several critical factors," explained Dr. Jankovic. "Unlike oral drugs, there are many technical aspects involved in administering BOTOX®, including dosing, dilution and injection placement and technique. Therefore, the injecting physician should have extensive knowledge of these treatment factors, along with a thorough understanding of the disease and its symptoms to ensure the product can deliver a targeted and precise effect." Dr. Jankovic emphasized the importance to patients, whether they are considering medical treatment with BOTOX® or aesthetic treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A), of seeking a well-trained physician with the qualifications necessary to evaluate and determine the best injection plan for each patient.

BOTOX® Research and DevelopmentIn concluding the Webinar, Scott Whitcup, M.D., Allergan's Executive Vice President for Research and Development, noted that Allergan is building upon its two decades of research and clinical experience with BOTOX® to investigate new medical uses for the product, with research focused on areas where safe and effective new treatment options will make a meaningful difference to large numbers of patients. Allergan also is exploring novel next generation neurotoxins with the potential for even more specific modes of action.

About BOTOX®BOTOX® was first approved by the FDA in 1989 for the blepharospasm (excessive eye blinking) and strabismus (misalignment of the eye). Since then BOTOX® also has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of cervical dystonia (a painful twisting of the neck) and severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating that is inadequately managed by topical agents). The same product, with dosing specific to treat glabellar lines (vertical frown lines between the brows), received FDA approval in 2002 under the name BOTOX® Cosmetic (to differentiate between its therapeutic and aesthetic applications). With that approval, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been the most popular physician-administered, aesthetic injectable treatment for the past seven years.2

Nearly 17 million treatment sessions with BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic have been recorded in the United States alone over the past 14 years,3 with approximately 22 million vials of BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic distributed worldwide to date.4 In addition to this extensive clinical experience with the product, the safety and efficacy of BOTOX® has been studied in approximately 50 randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials.5 Additionally, approximately 11,000 patients have been treated with BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic in Allergan-sponsored trials.6 With approximately 2,000 articles on BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic in peer-reviewed publications, BOTOX® is the most widely researched neurotoxin, and one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.

Important BOTOX® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) and BOTOX® Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A) InformationBOTOX® is approved for the treatment of cervical dystonia in adults to decrease the severity of abnormal head position and neck pain associated with cervical dystonia.
BOTOX® is approved for the treatment of strabismus and blepharospasm associated with dystonia, including benign essential blepharospasm or VII nerve disorders in patients 12 years of age and above.

The efficacy of BOTOX® treatment in deviations over 50 prism diopters, in restrictive strabismus, in Duane's syndrome with lateral rectus weakness, and in secondary strabismus caused by prior surgical over-recession of the antagonist has not been established. BOTOX® is ineffective in chronic paralytic strabismus except when used in conjunction with surgical repair to reduce antagonist contracture.

And BOTOX® is approved for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis that is inadequately managed with topical agents.
