Skin Script Skin Care Products, a Tempe, AZ distributor of clinical grade skin care products, launched a new skin care moisturizer today containing the Acai Berry from the Amazon Rain Forest. The berry has been touted as the new "Super Food" by health and fitness publications everywhere. Researchers have found that, among many other medical and cosmetic benefits, acai berries contain extremely high concentrations of antioxidants which have been shown to combat the signs of premature aging. • Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties
• Promotes healing and collagen synthesis

About Skin Script

Skin Script is a professional product line that specializes in clinical-grade skin care products for all skin types. How Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacials Work

Photofacials (Fotofacials™) or IPL, uses light energy to help reduce the appearance of sun damage, facial veins and freckles. It is a great way to make your face clearer and you don’t have to worry about trying to camouflage those annoying dark spots on your face with makeup anymore. I have received advanced training in the use of IPL and have over 1200 hours of experience performing this procedure on patients. Many client’s faces, chests, arms and necks have benefited. Just think, you can have those dark spots improve right before your eyes with a series of treatments that will help put a healthy glow on your face!

Many of my 1200 hours have been spent treating ethnic skin (e.g., Asian, East Indian, Hispanic). Not only does the treatment help with pigmentation issues but also helps with collagen stimulation which helps to tighten skin. However, do not leave your skin to just anyone. Make sure that the person performing your treatment has plenty of experience with your specific skin type and asks you pertinent questions before your treatment to ensure you will receive the safest and most effective treatment.

How It Works

The intense pulsed light travels down into the skin and is attracted to pigment. Pigment can be dark spots (freckles, age spots, sun spots) caused from sun damage or can be red discolorations caused from rosecea or broken blood vessels. With brown spots, the discoloration is brought to the surface of the skin and may appear temporarily darker for a few days until it flakes away. Red discolorations will generally fade with each treatment. Generally, there is no downtime. Your skin may be pink for a an hour or two, but the effects of clearer complexion are longer lasting.

It’s quick, it’s easy, and takes years off your appearance. If you still have questions, feel free to call, email or come into the office for a consultation. We can even do some test spots so you’ll feel more comfortable with how the procedure works before you start.

Skin Script Products Review From Cosmetic Connection

Reprinted from Cosmetic Connection. Click here to view the entire Skin Script line.

Many of you will know that I am always on the hunt for the latest and greatest in skin care products. It seems that my quest for the perfect skin care regimen is never ending. Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve discovered a new line of products that have left my skin happy, glowing and renewed.

Skin Script is a line of professional grade products. These products have been designed using cutting edge chemistry and skin care research. But rest assured, Skin Script products are NOT tested on animals – which is an absolute must in my world. They are an amazing blend of natural botanicals, antioxidants, and effective active ingredients. As such, they are extremely effective and definitely results-oriented.

The Skin Script line has been developed to be “chirally correct”, which is something that I knew nothing about before I came across this line. Chirally correct basically means that the molecules in the active ingredients have been formulated so that they work with the molecules in your skin, not against them. They are designed so that they can be used by and integrated into skin cells, so that you reap the maximum benefits. I’ve learned a lot about the chemistry of the dermis (skin) from researching the Skin Script line, and I’m happy to pass along my findings to you!

I went to a local med spa and asked an aesthetician to design a skin care regimen for my normal to combination skin. Skin Script has products specifically designed for every skin type. I came home with the following products, and I’ve been using them for about three months now.

Cranberry Antioxidant Cleansing Gel

This is a great gentle, foaming cleanser for both morning and evening use. It’s packed with cranberry and green tea antioxidants which leave my skin radiant and clean, but not over-stripped at all. I never experience any tightness or drying with this cleanser, which is rare when it comes to foaming-type cleansers. Check out the Skin Script website for descriptions of all of the active ingredients in these products, such as Yucca Schidigera Leaf/Root/Stem Extract (to improve cell growth) and Litchi Chinesis Pericarp (Litchee) Extract (to aid in cellular regeneration and protection). I don’t know what half of these things are, but I can tell you that they are very effective — in a gentle, non-chemical way. This cleanser also smells great and lasts forever, since a dime-sized dollop is all you need for a nice, foamy face wash.

Pomegranate Antioxidant Creamy Cleanser

When the weather is cooler, I prefer to use a creamy cleanser to keep my skin from becoming too dry and dehydrated. The Skin Script Pomegranate Cleanser is the perfect soothing and nourishing cleanser. It leaves my skin soft and smooth, and never feels like it leaves behind any residue, which I have found with other creamy cleansers. This product is also packed with effective ingredients, my favorites of which are the grape seed and pomegranate extracts. I feel like my skin just had a refreshing botanical bath every time.

Retinol 2% Exfoliating Scrub

In the mornings, I use the Retinol Exfoliating Scrub in the shower; just to make sure that all of the little jojoba beads (used for gentle scrubbing) get completely rinsed away afterwards. This is a powerful cellular turnover scrub containing retinol (vitamin A) and kojic, which is a gentle skin lightener to reduce the signs of sun damage or even reduce the appearance of scars. I have never experienced any irritation from this mild scrub, and I use it just about every day. My skin always feels soft and glowing afterwards.

Cranberry Antioxidant Toner

Anybody who has read my reviews in the past knows that I am a devoted fan of toners. I just love the idea of a “clean sweep” if you will, after cleansing and before applying moisturizers and sunscreen. The Skin Script Cranberry Antioxidant Toner is a gentle yet effective step in my skin care regimen. At first I was a little freaked out by the color, which has sort of a yellow-orangeish hue to it, but now I’m used to it, and I realize that the color comes from the recipe of botanical ingredients that make up this soothing concoction. The Cranberry Antioxidant Toner would be great for all skin types.

Vitamin C/Green Tea Serum

I was going to save this one for last, since it’s my favorite product in the line, but I just couldn’t wait. This serum is amazing, and I say that because of the way my skin feels “the morning after”. I apply the vitamin C/green tea serum at night, under the Skin Script night moisturizer, so that my skin can drink it in overnight. When I wake up, my skin is so soft and supple; sometimes I just can’t believe it. As with all of the Skin Script products, this serum is chock-full of powerful antioxidants and other natural ingredients to encourage skin cell regeneration and repair. It contains Acetyl Octapeptide-3 to smooth and reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the “expression zones” of the face. Talk about a great alternative to injection therapy! I’ve noticed a brighter, firmer, and clearer complexion for sure. This stuff is a lifesaver.

Peptide Eye Serum

I don’t use eye creams or serums regularly, although I probably should. Skin Script’s Peptide Eye Serum is designed to reduce the appearance of dark circles and under-eye puffiness with a mixture of peptides and green tea antioxidants. I have noticed that the skin under my eyes is firmer and less puffy. As for my dark circles, well – I think they’re a lost cause. That’s why I love my concealer!

Ageless Skin Moisturizer

This is an awesome light, non-greasy moisturizer for all skin types. It contains aloe and Co-Q10 to stimulate collagen growth and tighten the elastin in skin. I find that I use quite a big of this moisturizer, which is fine by me. It leaves my skin soft and soothed any time of the day.

Night Moisturizer

I have talked often in the past about the feeling of “feeding my skin”, and that is exactly how I feel about using Skin Script’s night moisturizer. I pretty much slather my face in this great smelling cream before I hit the hay, and wake up with soft, nourished skin every day. It has a shea butter base, which is well known to be a rich and yet non pore-clogging hydrator for skin, as well as other amazing botanicals such as honey extract for its antibacterial and healing properties, and rose hip fruit oil to strengthen capillaries. Skin Script recommends this moisturizer for dryer, non-oily skin types.

Sunscreen Day Moisturizer

Skin Script also developed a moisturizer with SPF 36, which is a must for daytime use. The Skin Script replenishing sunblock contains micronized zinc and botanicals, and is perfect for daily use – even around the eyes! I call it the “pink cream” because of its distinctive pink coloring and rich consistency. A little bit of this moisturizer goes a long way, so this jar will last me forever. It goes on smooth and absorbs quickly into my skin, so it wears fine under makeup. And I can rest assured that I’m protecting my skin from the sun’s dangerous rays.

Microdermabrasion Review From a DHI Customer

Microdermabrasion? What in the world is that?? I could barely pronounce it, let alone be able to define it – that is, until my friend showed up with the clearest skin I’d ever seen. I decided then and there, no matter what it was called, I wanted it!

Now, there was plenty of apprehension to go around when I finally decided to make the appointment for my treatment. What was it? Did I really need it? Is it painful? What are the long term results? New to these types of experiences, I began to research the process. After reading up on the basics, I took a good, long look in the mirror. Although only in my mid-30’s, I realized what years of sun exposure coupled with basic neglect had done to the complexion and condition of my skin. Day after day, I would go through my routines; piling layer upon layer of makeup, slathering on the sunscreen (when I happened to remember) and then of course, the unpredictable elements of nature that bombard me regularly. When the evening would come, I’d give a quick rinse of water or use a basic soap only to start over the next day with the same careless attitude. Years had begun to add up and I was seeing those lines, wrinkles and uneven skin conditions that we all dread. I realized that it was time to grow up and get a little more serious about treating my skin right. I figured this microdermabrasion “thing” may be a good place to begin. I couldn’t be happier with the result! But, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s talk about procedure:

Finding the right medical center should be first on the list. If your skin is important to you than the people you trust to handle it should be equal to the task. Look for credentials, professionalism, experience, and please make sure the staff are people with whom you feel comfortable. After looking into several medical facilities, I decided to hand over my skin dilemmas to Derma Health Institute. They are a physician-based facility and, trust me, it matters! From the moment I made the appointment, the staff was great and treated me with care and complete professionalism. Every question was answered, every concern was addressed. They provided a comfortable and elegant setting and the clinician who performed the services set me right at ease. I’ll definitely ask for her by name next time!

I was laid back in what seemed like an oversized recliner, comfortable and cozy. I decided to arrive that morning with no make-up on. I thought I’d make it easy on them. I learned that regardless how you arrive, they take care of cleansing your skin to start the treatment. A series of exfoliating began and I realized, almost instantly, that my skin had a tightness that I hadn’t experienced before. Hooray for firmer skin! After the exfoliating process, a sequence of moisturizing products were applied. Some of these left my skin feeling a bit tingly and occasionally uncomfortable. I wasn’t sure if my skin was perhaps too sensitive for some of the ingredients being used. However, the tingling sensation was short-lived and the next layer of product created a cooling effect that soothed and calmed my skin. All of these treatments, I learned, were loosening the dead skin cells and deep cleansing my pores. During this time of application, a wonderful face massage is ongoing. This was awesome! Soothing enough to deserve a cat-nap! I loved this! The girl had magic fingers!

In addition to my microdermabrasion, I also had the pumpkin peel. This chemical peel basically took off the yucky layer of my skin and brought out a more hydrated, translucent skin tone. Beautiful! Now, be aware that the effects of this peel are not immediate. A day or two will pass when you experience some dryness and, in my case, a small amount of redness on the cheeks. This is normal. Do not panic!

Once the peel process was over a small tubular device is brought out. The only way to describe this is to call it a “mini vacuum.” This part of the treatment was, by far, my favorite. During this procedure, they literally suction away all of the dead skin and remaining impurities. What a great sensation! I could’ve laid there for hours and had this part of the treatment – how relaxing! Once the “mini vacuum” was turned off, the process took a different turn. I didn’t want to admit it, but I had some problem areas that needed some specific attention. I struggle with blackheads and the clinician realized this right away. She proceeded to “dig out” some deep blackheads and this, I must admit, hurt…a lot… There are times in our lives, as women, when we realize that there will be some ‘pain’ that goes along with the ‘gain’. This was one of those moments. It’s nothing we can’t handle; we just need to be prepared that’s all. Once this was finished (whew!), a wonderful moisturizer completed the session.

Besides feeling completely cleansed, I wasn’t sure if the treatment had really worked. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The next two days, I noticed a small patch of mild rosacia on each cheek and some minor dry areas around my nose. It was nothing that anyone else would notice, but I decided to worry anyway. One phone call to Derma Health Institute and I realized that a reaction such as this was normal. Due to the pumpkin peel, some dry spotting is to be expected. Again, the staff was wonderful in helping me decide what would be best to maintain a smoother feel to my skin. After reviewing the many different options of skin care products, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Skin Script Night Moisturizer. After one use, I decided that this cream had to have been sent directly from the heavens! I love this stuff! I usually don’t go overboard on paying for lotions or creams, but I have no problem handing over money for this one. Normally, I’d take a bullet to defend my use of Aveda products, but I’ve been convinced! I’ve been using the Skin Script every night and my skin has never been softer. Don’t be deterred by any sticker shock you may feel. Get this stuff, it works!

Although I’m still in the process of paying attention to the long term result, I’ve got to admit, I’ve never been happier with the condition of my skin. I’m getting compliments all over the place! My husband loves this new glow I seem to have and my friends noticed this same difference right away. I think the clincher was when my teenage son noticed, all on his own. In fact, I believe his exact words were, “Mom, you look pretty today. Is something different?” You bet! Sign me up for another session Derma – I’m there!

Your Hands Can Be a Dead Giveaway of Your Age

Over time, sunspots and skin discoloration may become an issue. Also, the hands may lose volume as you age, causing the tendons, bones, and veins to become more prominent.

Combating aging hands takes more than just hand cream. Fortunately, help is available with new laser technology and advanced injectible filler procedures offered at Derma Health Institute. We are the first to offer a complete hand rejuvenation package to treat brown spots, discoloration, as well as resurface the skin of the hands for a remarkably smoother, more toned appearance.
Our packages provide instant results by replacing the volume loss in the skin and returning that beautiful soft color to your hands.

Key Points to Consider:
• We spend thousands of dollars on facial products and forget the most telling parts of the body; the hands
• Our hands work hard and endure much everyday
• The hands are one of the first places to start showing visible signs of aging and usually the last area we treat
• Hands are exposed to sun, chemicals, excessive heat, physical and stressful environments.
• Using a hand lotion to soften the skin on the hands rarely solves the problem of aging skin
• The hands are roughly the same surface area of the face
• Hands are exposed more than our faces and protected much less causing the aging process to accelerate in that area

What are the different types of skin rejuvenation treatments for hands?
• IPL Photofacial laser treatments
• Chemical peels
• Microdermabrasions
• Laser vein treatments
• Laser resurfacing
• Juvederm, Perlane or Restylane fillers

Derma Health Institute is currently running a $275 hand rejuvenation special which includes 3 IPL photofacial laser treatments and 3 microdermabrasions. You will love the way your hands look! Call our office to schedule a free consultation to discuss a complete hand makeover.

A Message to Men Considering Cosmetic Treatments

Think the Derma Health Institute is just for women? You'd be surprised how many of our patients are men who are looking to improve their appearance well into their later years.

In fact, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, men accounted for nine percent of cosmetic procedures in 2007. The number of procedures (surgical and nonsurgical) performed on men was just over 1 million, an increase of 17 percent from the previous year. Surgical procedures increased five percent; and nonsurgical procedures like those provided at Derma Health Institute increased 21 percent. Since 1997, non-surgical procedures like ours have increased over 886 percent for male clients!

What Are Men Looking For?
Like women, men are looking for trimmer waist lines and less wrinkles, both for personal and professional reasons. Invasive surgery simply isn't an option for most men -- and Derma Health Institute has alternatives that can meet your busy schedule, budget, and appearance goals. Whatever your reason, you'll find Derma Health Institute is a comfortable and discrete environment for the treatment you're looking for.

Test Your Knowledge on Laser Hair Removal

Hi my name is Heather Quest and I have been a laser technician for over five years and now do many of the consultations for potential laser hair removal clients. I receive so many questions on laser hair removal so I thought I would provide you with a fun 10-question True/False test on all the information you need to make a decision about laser hair removal.

1. True or False: Quality laser hair removal treatments are more effective than quantity.
True. Quality is everything. On average it should take about 5 treatments, however critical factors for quality are; 1) Number of laser pulses delivered or heat delivered to the area to ensure an effective treatment 2) Depth of the laser beam (i.e. IPL lasers are too shallow to give a long-term effective treatment) 3) how much time between treatments is critical for quality treatments and 4) the color and texture of the hair.

At Derma Health Institute quality is #2 after safety. We have standard protocols by our Doctors to ensure we deliver a minimum number of pulses per area, we use the finest lasers available for hair removal (Lumineus Light Sheer and Cutera Yag) and we ensure you come back for subsequent treatments only when the hairs are in the growing cycle (Anagen). Anagen cycles are the only time the hair follicle can be destroyed. The duration of the hair cycle and the percentage of hair in the Anagen cycle are different for all areas of the body. Always be sure to have someone check the hair color & texture first to be sure you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal.

2. True or False: Laser hair removal for dark skin is neither safe nor effective.
False. It is perfectly safe and effective to treat dark skin all the way up to the darkest skin types. The key is to use a laser that will by-pass the skins natural color and go below to only target the color of the hair. We have FDA approved lasers that safely and effectively treat ethnic skin.

3. True or False: Blonde, gray, or red hairs can be effective treated with laser hair removal.
False. Sorry! Doesn’t matter what we do- unfortunately you wont be a candidate for laser hair removal if the target hair is not a darker color. The laser technology of today is based on the laser’s ability to attract to dark colored hair below the skin.

4. True or False: You can dye light hair darker and have effective laser hair removal results.
False. The laser light penetrates below the skin keeping it intact until it reaches its target – a dark hair follicle. Dye will only temporarily treat the hair on top of the skin so the color of the follicle stays the same and the laser will not notice a target to absorb the energy

5. True or False: Laser Hair Removal is painful.
False & True. There is no need for numbing crème or pain reliever. The sensation is best described as a snap of a rubber band, so even though you don’t need numbing creme it can be sensitive depending on the area we’re working on. You’ll find you will be most sensitive in areas where there is bone (an example would be around your ankles).
At our clinics we try to make it extra comfortable and use a machine called a Zimmer chiller to blow cold air on the area to help with sensitivity and to protect the skin from possible burns. We also use a cold ultra-sound gel and our laser tips are self-icing to protect the skin. If you’re unsure, come in and we’ll provide test spots free of charge to anyone that would like to try it out first.

6. True or False: Laser Hair Removal is Safe.
True. The industry has safely and effectively performed thousands of laser hair removal treatments. Yes, laser burns can happen so I recommend you choose a clinic with experience, in which case burns should be very rare. Avoid sun exposure before & after your treatments and always let your technician know of current medications when starting your treatments and any changes in medication throughout your treatment. A common example of medication changes we see is antibiotics. It is a photosensitizing drug that can make you more susceptible to a burn so we typically won’t treat you during that time.

7. True or False: Any body part for men and women can be effectively treated with laser hair removal.
True. As long as it’s not blonde, gray or red hair. Most common areas for women are underarms, bikini line (or Brazilian, that’s everything!), legs, arms, upper lip, eyebrows, facial hair, and aereola. Anything goes so don’t be embarrassed to ask.

Men most commonly have laser hair removal done on their back, chest, neck, ears, beard area, and buttocks. Lots of athletes now like all hair gone and proceed with arms and legs.

8. True or False: It’s important to have the same technician each time.
True. We surveyed our clientele and asked how important it was for them to have the same technician each time. All participants said it was extremely important. Technically, if there are proper protocols in place by the clinic, it is not imperative, but we found that most clients felt this was a personal thing and they felt most comfortable sticking to one technician. I agree.

9. True or False: You can shave between laser hair removal appointments.
True. No problem shaving. Just don’t pluck. We need the root of the hair to be in tact for your next appointment. A general rule of thumb might be to see about a 10 to 20% reduction in hair each time you come in. So, while hair growth seems to slow way down between those treatments, hair will start slowly growing, and it would be perfectly safe to shave between treatments. With proper maintenance you will see as much as a 90% reduction in hair.

10. True or False: Derma Health Institute is a leader in the Industry.
True. I couldn’t help that question. Each of our technicians has over 4000 hours behind laser treatments. Our technicians are continually attending new training, we have 3 on-site physicians and we have seen over 7,000 clients at our facilities. If you come in and meet us I think you’ll find we are very high quality at a reasonable cost.

Feel free to call or email if you have questions. We’ll provide whatever information you need and there is never a requirement to buy.

Stephanie Betts Passion for Laser Hair Removal

I have been an aesthetician/ laser clinician at Derma Health Institute for over three years and in the industry for over six. My specialty at Derma Health Institute is laser hair removal. I understand exactly how the laser is working, what it is doing to your hair and skin, and I can explain to you so that you too will understand and feel like you are in good hands.

I feel that having had 99% client satisfaction (my patients always complete a survey), I can successfully treat your hairs at the right growth cycle, so you can start to see your reduction quickly. Everyone in our clinic and I believe in safety first and Derma Health Institute and all its laser clinicians have an immaculate safety record. I have done hundreds of treatments on clients and had numerous treatments done on myself, and I know exactly what types of skin/ hair response to look for to know that you are getting an effective treatment. I will set realistic expectations for each individual and let you know what to expect during, in- between and after each of your treatments. I will always work with and for you, the client, to make sure that everything possible is done to achieve as much hair reduction as can be achieved, and to make sure that each person leaves happy. I do my best to make each client feel comfortable, when they may sometimes feel a little nervous. I have treated just about every ethnic background and feel 100% comfortable doing so. Different skin types must be treated with the right type of equipment, and I know that I always make the right judgment when it comes to choosing the equipment to treat with.

Still not sure? Come in and meet with me and I’ll give you everything you need to know. And, I’ve written a few paragraphs below that will give you a good background in laser hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal
Our hair grows in three different cycles, first it is a baby hair, then it is a full active adult follicle, then it naturally dies and falls out of our body. This is true for every single hair on every part of our bodies. When being treated by a laser for hair removal, the laser will only kill the hair when it is in the full adult follicle stage. Therefore, when being treated, it is always necessary to have numerous treatments. At Derma Health Institute, we do our hair removal in a series of 5 treatments. After your five treatments, we strive to have a 70-90% reduction of the hair in the treated area. Age, ethnicity, hormones and body part being treated are all a few of the factors that play in the results achieved.

It is very unlikely that you will ever see a 100% hair loss in any area with any type of hair removal treatment, due to the fact that we have hormones. Hormones are what cause our hair growth, and unless you were to get rid of your hormones completely, you will always have some sort of hair growth. If having to shave soft fine hairs once in a while as apposed to 5 times a week sounds appealing to you, then you would be a good candidate for our treatments. While you will experience permanent hair reduction with your laser treatments, maintenance is sometimes necessary to maintain your hair reduction. Maintenance treatments really vary on each individual. It could mean getting a touch up once a year, to three times a year. This can normally be determined by your laser clinician before you are through with your series of five.

Depending on what happens to your hairs after each treatment would determine how long your treatments will be spaced out. Once you have had your treatment, the hairs will shed themselves out of your body. You will then be “hair free” for a period of a few weeks. After this “hair free” period, you will start to notice hairs sprouting back in. Approximately 3-4 weeks after you notice the sprouting back in stage, you will be back in the office for your next treatment. Because every person’s body does everything at different rates, you will be in touch with your laser clinician to let them know how long these stages take for you, so you both know when to book your subsequent treatments. On average treatments are booked every 8-12 weeks.

There are very few restrictions when it comes to getting hair removal treatments. A major one is that you can not have any unnatural skin color on the body part that is being treated. What this means is that when it is time for your treatment, your skin (on the treated area) has to be at its most natural state. No tan (intentional or un-intentional) No sunburn, No tanning or bronzing lotions. This is a huge contraindication because the laser is looking for any color under the skin. The only color we want is the hair color. Another small restriction is that the hairs being treated can not be waxed or tweezed 4 weeks prior to your appointment. The laser is looking for the follicle to kill, and when the hair is tweezed, the follicle is being pulled out, therefore, there would be nothing for the laser to target.

Since the hair is killed by the laser attacking the pigment in the follicle, laser hair removal only works on hairs with enough pigment in them. Blonde, gray, white, some reds, and some light brown hair are untreatable with the laser. This is not to say that you could not come in to get some test spots on the area in question before laser treatments would be ruled out.

In conclusion, I think we’re the best in the industry at Derma Health Institute in terms of safety and results at a comparable cost. It’s why I stay here, not to mention that I would never want to leave my clients! When you’re ready, I hope you’ll come see us!

Tattoo Removal Requires Quality Lasers

My name is Hayley and I’m one of the laser clinician/aestheticians at Derma Health Institute in Mesa. I have been using the Medlite laser for two years now and no other tattoo removal laser compares to it, in my opinion. It is known in the industry as the gold standard for tattoo removal lasers.

I’ve found over the years that many of my clients that are interested in removing a tattoo know very little about the process or for those that have had it done before; they have had very bad experiences somewhere else. I cannot stress enough the importance of using a quality laser in your treatments and having a technician that is highly trained in that area. I have seen some terrible scarring from tattoo removal and that shouldn’t happen with a quality laser. Many substandard lasers not only remove the pigment of the tattoo but also the pigment of the skin in that area, leaving a hypo-pigmented scar (i.e. white patches). Of course, that defeats the whole purpose!

Our protocol is to do Medlite treatments in a series so there is enough time in between treatments for the skin to heal properly. The Medlite laser removes the pigment of the tattoo safely and with no scarring, leaving the skin looking exactly the way it did before the tattoo. In fact, I even use the Medlite for skin rejuvenation/toning because it diminishes scarring and tightens the skin. If anything, your skin will look better than it did before! If you are considering tattoo removal, I suggest you schedule a complimentary consultation and come in and meet our staff. In the consultation, we will give you all the details on how the treatments work and it is no cost to you. We can even do test spots so you’ll know exactly what to expect. It will also give you the chance to see our facility and make sure you are comfortable with us.

Nutrition and Healing from the Inside Out

As Americans we tend to focus on our appearance and how we can improve upon it. So, we purchase pricey moisturizers, serums and other “anti-aging” products that will some how stop us from aging. We have the right idea about antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and using them on our skin to prevent aging and damage, but we are also missing a key factor—healing from the inside out. That is right, the old proverb that we were taught as children is true…you are what you eat! Keep in mind, the vitamins and minerals we consume, either by food or dietary supplements, are ingested and absorbed into our bodies through our bloodstream and taken to nourish cells, tissues and organs. Remember, skin is the largest organ of the entire body.

Vitamin C is a good example of an antioxidant that can work topically and internally. The most absorbable form when applied to the skin is L-Ascorbic acid. Your body can recognize this form and readily absorb it and use to protect against free radicals. Vitamin C is also used by the body in collagen production and stimulation, so it helps keep those fibers (that compose collagen) strong and firm. When Vitamin C is taken internally, not only is it a potent antiviral, and antibacterial it helps to feed the internal stimulation of collagen and speeds the healing process by helping to build the matrix of our skin.

Another superb substance for your overall well being and skin, is fish oil. That’s right, you may have heard them be called Omega 3 fatty acids, they are one of the same. These fatty acids help to make up every cell in our body. They also are potent antioxidants, help to reduce inflammation in the body, regulate hormones and lubricate our joints. These same fatty acids help to nourish the skin by allowing skin cells to maintain suppleness and allowing cellular waste to pass out of the cell, instead of being caught inside.

I encourage you to consider nourishing both your inside and outside. You will feel and look better! If you have questions about what supplements to take or questions on nutrition, email me at mesa@dermahealthinstitute.com and I’ll get back with you.

Skin Nutrition and Food List

The skin is a reflection of our overall health. As the largest organ of the body it works 24/7 to maintain its barrier, protect us from the sun as well as acting as a depository for toxins and acid waste. Research shows that the vast majority of nutrition utilized by the skin are provided by what we consume in our diets. Whether it is proteins, fats, enzymes, or vitamins and minerals, our skin relies on what we eat to maintain healthy function. In addition, when the body is unhealthy, acidic or stressed, the skin often takes the brunt of the abuse. The purpose of this material is to simplify the complex functions of the skin so that they are understandable and to highlight the nutritional support that makes both the body and the skin look and feel great.

Many of the foods we eat everyday are considered “acid-forming”. What this means is that the byproducts of the foods form acids that are often absorbed into our bloodstream through the intestines. Our bodies respond to this inflammation and disease promoting event by depositing the acids in fatty tissue and our organs (including the skin). Acid forming foods are not necessarily common sense. For example, lemons/lemon juice seemingly acidic, yet, post-digestion, it is actually very alkalinizing (alkaline is the opposite of acidic). Most greens including vegetables are alkalinizing, yet many fruits are in fact slightly acid-forming due to the sugar content. An acidic environment in your body promotes more inflammation, encourages yeast/fungus overgrowth, slows metabolism, taxes your immune system and, in general, ages the body. We do not see acidity in the pH of the blood samples because the body, for survival, shifts minerals like calcium and phosphorus into the blood stream while pushing acidic remnants of food into various tissues.

In addition to the acid issue, the body must also deal with large numbers of artificial ingredients, hormones, pesticides and other harmful chemicals such as artificial sweeteners, etc. Once again, this taxes the immune system, creates hormonal imbalances and promotes disease. Our body ends up spending most of its time repairing damage that we create through poor dietary habits or food choices. Eating natural, organic and/or raw foods will help minimize the exposure to these harmful ingredients.

While Americans tend to eat approximately 25% more than they use to 30 years ago, they are getting fewer nutrients in these foods. Even our fruits and vegetables are lacking as they are often grown in soils depleted of essential minerals and nutrients from over-farming. As a nation we are vitamin and nutrient starved and benefit greatly from supplementation in that area. While vitamins are often known for their antioxidant properties, a greater function for both vitamins and minerals is their work at the cell level where they help drive virtually all of the processes in the body.

To add insult to injury, we don’t combine food properly when we eat. This makes it harder to digest foods, which means the availability of their nutrients is reduced. Then they are brought into the intestine that has trouble absorbing these partially digested nutrients because of their condition and because the intestinal walls are compromised by chronic abuse. Many Americans have “indigestion” as a result of poor food combining and mistakenly try to reduce the indigestion by suppressing acid formation or alkalinizing their partially digested meals with supplements like Tums. Partially digested foods become a source of toxicity in the colon and elsewhere once absorption occurs. The more digestion is interrupted by these prescriptions, the more toxins are created.

To effectively treat skin conditions such as acne, we need to understand the connection between skin health and overall physical health. It is just as important to treat the skin from the inside as it is to treat it from the outside.

Fighting Acne at Any Age

Acne is the most common of all skin conditions that affects most people at some time during their lives. It is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by skin eruptions on the face and possibly the chest, back and shoulders. Acne vulgaris, the least severe form of acne, affects the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles, manifesting as blackheads, whiteheads, and redness. Acne conglobata, a more severe form, is characterized by the formation of pustules and cysts with the potential for subsequent scarring. Both forms are more common among males than females with the onset typically at or shortly after puberty. For some people it may not appear until their mid twenties and can persist into middle age.

Signs and Symptoms:
Blackheads – dilated skin follicles with central dark plugs, pinhead size
Whiteheads – red, swollen follicles with or without white pustules
Pustules – tender nodules of pus deep in the skin that discharge contents to the surface
Cysts – deep firm nodules that fail to discharge contents to the surface

Causes:
Acne can typically be attributed to one or all of the following three reasons:

Hormonal shifts:
Acne originates in the skin’s pores, each of which contains a hair follicle and a sebaceous gland. During hormonal fluctuations, increases in levels of testosterone cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce excess sebum (oil). In addition, increased testosterone within the skin stimulates the cells that line the follicle canal to produce keratin (a protein that is the main component of the skin’s outermost layer). An overproduction of either keratin or sebum can result in trapped bacteria and blocked pores. Incomplete blockages allow sebum to reach the surface of the skin resulting in blackhead formation. Complete blockages cause bacteria that is normally present in our pores to overgrow, release enzymes that break down sebum and promote inflammation, resulting in redness and pimples.

Poor Intestinal Health:
Besides the hormonal changes in the body, acne can be caused by bacteria, constipation and dietary problems. Constipation is an issue that results from inadequate amounts of fruits, veggies and water in the “Standard American Diet”. Toxins (from preservatives, additives, pesticides, pollution) in our digestive track are reabsorbed when there is stagnation. The body may find an alternate route to eliminate the waste through the skin. Acne can be toxins expressed on the skin. Long term antibiotic use may help skin problems temporarily but over a period of time they can damage the intestinal wall leading to an increased absorption of toxins furthering the original problem. In addition soil where our food is grown has been over used leaving it mineral deficient. These vitamin and mineral deficiencies do not allow the skin to regenerate or the body’s immune system to fight off bacteria.

Agents producing acne-like lesions:
Various drugs, such as oral contraceptives, progesterone, or corticosteroids can produce this effect. Occupational exposures such as hygienist masks, machine oils or coal tar derivatives can contribute to acne. In addition greasy cosmetics, over cleansing skin with inappropriate products, and touching face with hands or unclean objects (i.e. cell phones) can also increase acne lesions.

Treatment:
Treating acne usually requires a combination of solutions to control the disease. Below is a description of those solutions used at Derma Health Institute. The severity of an individual’s acne will determine which treatments are recommended.

Skin Care:
The most obvious first step is skin care. It’s important to use physician-grade products (skin care in its purest form). Many over-the-counter products contain impure ingredients that can end up over drying the skin which will cause the body to counteract by producing even more oil. Cosmetics can create issues as well because they are generally oil- based and lead to clogged pores and increased acne. Mineral make-up is recommended due to its pure crushed minerals that allow the skin to breathe. Another important factor in skin care is using a clean wash cloth each time. A wash cloth will help exfoliate and thoroughly clean the skin. Other areas to consider are oil and dirt build up on cell phones, pillow cases and hands that are constantly in contact with the skin. In addition oil from our hair and hair care products can contaminate the skin and cause more outbreaks.

Below are the skin care products that are commonly prescribed for our acne patients.

Skin Care Products:
Blemish Control Cleanser- with 2% Salicylic & 2% Glycolic along with Tea Tree. This acne control cleanser will increase cellular turnover bringing oil and debris to the surface of the skin; salicylic then dries the uplifted oil. Tea tree calms and soothes the skin.

Blemish Control Toner - with 2% Salicylic & 2% Glycolic Cleanser with Tea Tree. This acne control toner assists the cleanser in cellular turnover bringing oil and debris to the surface of the skin – the salicylic dries the uplifted oil. This step also removes excess dirt, oil and makeup left after the cleansing process. Tea tree calms and soothes the skin.

Blemish Spot Treatment – contains a5% benzoyl peroxide. This spot treatment rapidly dries each blemish and encourages healing.

Light Aloe Moisturizer -This ultra light moisturizer hydrates and protects oily and blemished skin. It is very important to lightly hydrate even oily skin. Lack of hydration will result in excess production from the oil glands

Glycolic and Retinol Pad -with Kojic. These pads break up surface oil to refine pores and reveal fresh, healthy skin. Kojic lightens sun spots and scars left from blemishes.

Retinol 2% Exfoliating Scrub - with Kojic. This scrub is a powerful cellular turnover scrub with Retinol (Vitamin A) and jojoba beads to clean, soothe and polish the skin. The retinol encourages the breakup of blackheads and clogged pores, jojoba beads gently exfoliate dead skin cells, while kojic lightens age spots and blemishes left from scars.

Clarity Topical Serum – is an all natural serum that addresses hormonal influences. Its unique herbal blend blocks hormonal stimulation of sebum while exfoliating and decreasing bacteria within the skin.

Neova R2 Lotion Intermediate - A moisturizer specifically for rosacea-prone skin. It is formulated for sensitive skin to help visibly suppress redness and signs of irritation.

Diet and Nutrition:
Fast food/junk food/processed foods top the list of what Americans put into their bodies. Cutting back on refined sugars and high fat foods in the diet is important in controlling acne. A well-balanced diet that is high in beans, grains, fresh fruits and vegetables is always good for the skin. Drinking a lot of water keeps the circulation well flushed of the toxins that cause acne or make it worse. A rule of thumb is to drink ½ your body weight in ounces per day, adding in an additional 8oz for each vice (coffee, soda, sugar containing foods, or cigarettes) and each ½ hour of exercise.

Nutritional Supplements:
The fact is most people are deficient in vitamins and minerals that are important for your body to function properly. The nutritional value of our fruits and vegetables is not nearly what it was fifty years ago due to pest controls and soil demineralization. As mentioned previously, we are not getting the proper nutrition needed and almost everyone can benefit from a nutritional supplement:

Nutrient 950® Without Iron –Your skin is the largest organ of your body and it requires proper nutrition to function properly just like every other part of your body. Taking a multivitamin can provide vital nutrients that help to boost the immune system and help you manage stress better. Collectively, strong immunity and stress control help reduce breakouts and PREVENT acne.

Tri-EFA –Essential fatty acids (EFA’s) are very powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Some people have systemic deficiency of EFA’s due to low consumption especially in the case of diets high in processed foods, high consumption of trans-fats, or help control the production of androgens – the hormones that surge during the teen-age times, which causes excess sebum oil to clog your hair follicle and contribute to creating acne hereditary factors that frequently involve digestive enzyme issues. These conditions becomes a driving factor in acne and other skin problems.

Nicomide – A pharmaceutical grade water-soluble vitamin and mineral therapy that targets inflammation associated with acne. This is a safe therapy associated with few side effects or long-term risks.

Clarity Supplement – This is a proprietary blend of antibacterial herbs and nutrients that help detoxify the skin through a cleansing process that will reduce inflammation and sebum (oil) production, improving acne on the face and body. It works from within your body by supporting your body’s natural processes to battle acne at its source without the undesirable side effects associated with Accutane and antibiotics. It is beneficial to use this in conjunction with Clarity Topical Serum.

Restore Colon Cleanse – The American diet lacks many of the essential nutrients necessary for digestive health leading to a damaged digestive track that is unable to absorb/eliminate nutrients properly. One of the best ways to improve skin health is to improve digestive health. This proprietary blend in powder form is mixed with water or juice twice a day. It eases the digestive process by eliminating toxic build-up from our diets and restoring the “good” bacteria vital to colon health and healthy glowing skin.

Deep Pore Cleansing/Peels:
For those individuals that have minimal to moderate acne or have not tried many solutions, we typically start here. Under the direction of the Doctor, the aesthetician will educate the use of proper skin care products, techniques and foods to help control acne. It takes about 6 to 10 sessions to clear the skin. The combination of deep pore cleansings and a good skin care line have proven highly successful for most patients with minimal to moderate acne. Treatments may combine extractions, exfoliation and a mask to deep clean pores and hydrate the skin. An intense salicylic or glycolic peel may also be added for a more aggressive approach to treat active acne. Blu-U Light Therapy is often combined with Deep Pore Cleansing facials to help control acne.

Blu-U Light Therapy:
BLU-U technology is a very specific wavelength of light that gets to the root of the acne and releases the acne fighting molecules called porphyrins. The porphyrins start a chemical reaction resulting in the release of peroxides, which finally destroy the bacteria causing acne within the skin. The sessions can be 15 minutes 2x/week or 30 minutes 1x/week for 5 weeks. Click here for more info.

Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy:
Treatments with Levulan® are a more intensive approach to help control active acne. Levulan® or aminolevulinic acid originally designed to treat actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions) has become a therapy that is routinely used to enhance acne laser and light treatments. It is a “natural” product found in all humans throughout the body, a precursor for hemoglobin synthesis (you wouldn’t be able to make red blood cells to carry oxygen without ALA in your body). Research has demonstrated, that topically applied Levulan® activated by BLU –U light has the ability to destroy the bacteria and shrink sebaceous glands. Decreased oily skin and pore reduction is seen in most patients, as well as, improvements in smoothness and texture. Usually 3 treatments every 3-4 weeks is recommended. Click here for more info.

Laser Toning:
Developments in laser technology now offer a breakthrough in the treatment of active acne. A laser is used to transfer heat into the skin targeting the bacteria that produces inflammation associated with acne. The level of heat does not cause skin damage but rather stimulates a heat-shock response in the bacteria. Heat shock proteins (porphyrins), activated by bacterial cells under the heat stress, cause the self-destruction of bacteria within the lesion, reducing inflammation and allowing the skin to return to a healthy state.

Laser Peels for Acne Scarring:
Once the acne is gone, many individuals are left with scars. Lasers have been used to treat acne scars for several years. In such treatments a laser is used plane down the skin and heat the collagen layer. By heating the collagen layer the laser stimulates the body to create more collagen. With increased collagen the skin appears more “plump” thus decreasing the appearance of the scarring.

Laser Hair Removal For Any Skin Type

I’m Stephanie and have been one of the laser technicians at the Chandler Derma Health Institute since its inception. Over the years I’ve accumulated a pretty good following of men and women laser hair removal clients, especially clients with darker skin types.

When it comes to laser hair removal there are many lasers for different skin types, so it’s important for me that I have more than one choice depending on the skin color I’m treating. While many lasers claim to treat both dark and light skin types, I’ve found that there are lasers that are specifically the best at one or the other. The reason it’s important to distinguish between dark skin vs. light skin is that lasers look for any pigment under the skin to target and kill (i.e. dark hair). However, people with more color in their skin have to be extra cautious that they are being treated with a laser that will not target their skin color but only their hair color.

Melanin cells, or the cells in our skin which give our skin color, lay very close to the epidermis, or surface of our skin. Darker skin types obviously have more melanin in the surface layer of their skin, where lighter skin will not have much melanin in the surface. Because of these facts, light skin and dark hair is the ideal candidate for laser hair removal. However, darker skin is also very effective with the right laser.

In our office we use a Diode Light Sheer from Lumenis which we have found to be the most effective in providing results to lighter skin types. We use a Cutera YAG for our hair removal treatments for darker skin types. The Diode is best on light skin due to the fact that it penetrates very superficially into the skin. The YAG penetrates much deeper, which means it will bypass any skin color and target only pigmented hairs.

If you’re interested in learning more on laser hair removal for any skin type you can call, email or set up a consultation at one of our offices. I’m always available at our Chandler office if you want to specifically talk with me and I’m happy to share my knowledge with you!
